Floridians, I'd love your inside scoop. I'm a New Yorker who has been to FL many times on vacation but now considering buying a vacation home on the water. My family and I would spend a few months there & other times we'd rent it out for others to enjoy (we've owned a couple other rental properties so know the pain & joy that comes from them;). What areas do you recommend? We prefer laid back vibe to posh. These are our ideals: Max 40 min from a major airport - direct flights. -Waterfront - on a canal with easy Gulf access or similar - fun for the kids (teen boys) to kayak, fish right from the dock out back built in pool & hot tub in a lanai -Walkable / bike-able to some services (restaurant / bar/ store) south Florida so it stays warmer in the winter months. Have seen a lot of homes w/ these descriptions in Cape Coral & Fort Myers (areas recommended by neighbors who have homes in those areas). Any others? Thx for suggestions! BTW: we'd rent around different areas to get a feel first, but wanted a head start.
